RE: AREA 8 (HINDS, RANKIN, MADISON & SCOTT COUNTIES )
For some time now, there has not been an Area Director for Area 8. We are happy to announce that Patrick Weldon, MD is now the director of Area 8. Dr. Weldon is a Neurologist at Central Mississippi Medical Center where he serves as the Chief of Medicine and Chairs the Neurology Department. He is on staff with the University of Mississippi Medical Center , where he teaches, and serves as Clinical Instructor and Professor.
Dr. Weldon is originally from Louisiana , where he was a Special Olympics volunteer and coach. He is married and has four children. He is active in marathons, triathlons and other activities to raise funds to benefit charitable organizations.
On Saturday, September 19, Special Olympics Mississippi will host "Meet the Director, Day in the Park" at Liberty Park in Madison , MS beginning at 9:00 AM. The Belhaven baseball team will conduct softball team activities. Croquet, horseshoes, and softball skills events will also be conducted. The activities will be open to all past and present Special Olympics Area 8 athletes, as well as any athletes who are interested in joining the Special Olympics team. Lunch will be served.
When athletes arrive at the park, the parent, guardian or regional center representative escorting them will be asked to sign a release. This will be necessary since the medicals of so many of the previously registered athletes have expired and we hope that athletes who have not participated in the past will join us.
Athletes who attend this event will be eligible to attend the SOMS State Fall Games at Camp Shelby , October 9 – 11.
